Tips For Your Abbreviated Ed Plan

As a new De Anza student, you'll want to create an abbreviated educational plan for your first one or two quarters. This video has tips for using Degree Works to create an ed plan. Below the video, you'll find some step-by-step instructions.

  1. Degree Works iconSign-in to your MyPortal account.

  2. Open the Apps page and click on the Degree Works icon, then click "Go To Degree Works"

  3. Degree Works opens in the Audit Screen. The audit reflects your chosen De Anza goal.

  4. Click on the Plans tab to create an Education Plan.

  5. Click on New Plan (upper right screen) then choose Blank Plan and the Edit screen opens. Give your Plan a Description such as: Abbreviated Ed Plan – History (use your major).

  6. Check the Active box.

  7. Click the (+) symbol in the upper right corner to add a new term.

  8. From the Still Needed Section on the right side of your screen, you can drag and drop courses directly onto the Education Plan. For example, click on the General Education requirements pull down list, then drag a course over and drop it right on the term title bar and it will appear on the plan.

  9. Courses that are not degree applicable can be found under the course search function. Click the (+) symbol, which is located under your chosen quarter, and choose Course.

  10. Click the search icon (magnifying glass) and type in the “Subject” you want to place on your plan: EWRT, MATH, HIST, ESL, etc.; then choose the specific class you want from this scrolling list. All courses taught at De Anza College appear on this list in a 5-character format. Example: EWRT 1A appears as (D001A) and MATH 114 appears as MATH (D114.) Foothill courses start with the letter F.

  11. You can add more courses to this term if you want, or choose a new term.

  12. When finished with a 1-2 quarter plan be sure to click SAVE (lower right).

    • Remember to hit the SAVE button periodically, because the system times out if you have been idling.

  13. Success! You may now log out.
    • If you get an error message you most likely have a term or course field that was left blank. Click on the blank field until it turns dark blue, then click the (-) symbol to delete the blank field.

After you have saved your ed plan, you will have completed the final step for priority registration. Your ed plan is your guide to choosing classes for your next term. You still need to register for your classes in MyPortal on or after your your assigned registration date.

Important Notes

  • To be considered a full-time student, you must be enrolled in at least 12 units.
  • If you have chosen UNDECIDED as a major, you will not be able to create an education plan. You can choose a major in MyPortal when you begin your term.
