    Committee Reactivation and Appreciation

The committee reconvened after a period of limited activity during COVID, at the request of President Torres, to formally reactivate SLO oversight and coordination.

At the outset, the committee expressed deep appreciation to Mary Pape and Mallory Newell for their sustained leadership in maintaining SLO processes, reporting, and accreditation compliance during the committee’s inactivity. The college owes them a significant debt of gratitude for ensuring that outcomes work remained current and that accreditation requirements continued to be met during this period.

Members reaffirmed that outcomes assessment remains an accreditation requirement and is tied directly to the five-year curriculum cycle and program review processes. The group reviewed the framework of outcomes across the institution: instructional SLOs, student services SLOs (SSLOs), and administrative unit outcomes (AUOs). It was noted that SLOs must appear on course syllabi and that past faculty concerns have centered primarily on workload and mechanical reporting processes.

Website, Data Collection, and Current Practices

The committee reviewed the current SLO website structure, which houses instructional SLOs, SSLOs, AUOs, program-level outcomes, annual course-level assessment reports, and training resources.

Course-level SLO data are presently collected through a Microsoft Form and manually maintained and posted to the website. While the system has functioned, members acknowledged that it relies heavily on centralized coordination and manual processes.

Canvas Insights – Overview and Purpose

The committee received an overview of Canvas Insights as a potential improvement to the current process. Insights extends Canvas outcomes and SpeedGrader functionality to allow faculty to assess SLOs directly through assignment rubrics. Course-level SLOs can be mapped to program-level (PLO) and institutional-level outcomes (ILOs), strengthening alignment for program assessment and accreditation reporting.

Under this model, faculty would select an outcome, attach it as a rubric criterion to one or a limited number of assignments, and score it during grading. Insights would automatically aggregate results, capturing the same information currently submitted through the Microsoft Form. The Microsoft Form would remain available for courses not using Canvas grading or for in-person assessment contexts.

The committee emphasized that Insights must reduce duplicate work and not introduce additional compliance burden. Faculty are not expected to connect every assignment to an SLO; targeted alignment to key assignments is sufficient. It was also clarified that individual faculty comments remain protected within the system.

    Implementation and Professional Development

Insights has not yet been implemented. The earliest potential start would be the end of Winter quarter, with a phased rollout expected over several years.
A professional development and communication plan will be developed prior to the next meeting. The committee underscored that clear guidance, practical examples, and sustained training will be essential to ensuring faculty engagement and minimizing compliance fatigue.

    Next Steps

    • Develop a structured professional development and communication plan for Canvas Insights.
    • Clarify expectations regarding minimal SLO assignment alignment.
    • Continue evaluating how Insights can streamline reporting and reduce manual processes.

The committee will continue its work with a focus on sustainability, clarity, and alignment with accreditation and program review requirements.
