Sad News About Our Colleague
Jan. 3, 2024
Dear Colleagues,
As we mark the beginning of a new year, and prepare to welcome our students to a new quarter, I must also share sad news: the unexpected death of faculty member Jeff Staudinger.
Jeff taught for almost 14 years in Environmental Sciences, and as Dean Anita Muthyala-Kandula noted in an email, was a "pillar" of both the department and the Biological, Health and Environmental Sciences Division. As Anita also said, Jeff was not only a co-worker, but a "good friend, a caring mentor, and an excellent teacher." I urge that we keep that in mind as we mourn Jeff, and think of the thousands of students whose minds and lives he so expertly influenced, in a field crucial to the futures of us all.
I know you join me in holding Jeff's wife, daughter, mother, and other family members in our hearts and minds. We understand that his family prefers not to receive calls at this time, as they work through this tragic and sudden loss. No public service is currently planned, but the division will hold a memorial for Jeff in winter quarter. Anita will provide information at a later date.
Thank you for your kindness to our colleagues and our students, with the knowledge that life is fragile, and time can be short.
With appreciation,
Lloyd
