How to Take Classes at Other Schools

- The instrctions listed on this page are for F-1 students at De Anza only -

As an F-1 visa student, you are allowed to take classes at another college or university without requiring permission from De Anza.  To take a class at Foothill, a concurrent enrollment authorization form from De Anza ISP is no longer needed!

However, please keep the following in mind:

  1. Majority of Units at Home Campus: To maintain your F-1 status, you must have the majority of your units (and a minimum of 8-9 on-campus or hybrid units) at your home campus, De Anza College. Failure to do so may result in a violation of your F-1 immigration status. If you have any questions about this requirement, please speak with the De Anza ISP office.

  2. De Anza + 1 Rule: In addition to De Anza College, students on F-1 visas can only enroll concurrently at one other school/college/university and that includes Foothill College.

  3. Consult With a Counselor: We highly recommend checking with a counselor to ensure that the courses you plan to take at another school align with your academic goals. Be aware that course sequences and content at Foothill and De Anza are not always identical. It's important to verify with a counselor that the courses you choose will meet your educational objectives. Their contact information can be found here: https://www.deanza.edu/international/our-counselors.html

  4. Taking Classes at a School Other Than Foothill: If you plan to take classes at a school that is not Foothill College, please contact your International Student Adviser for an authorization letter.  If you are using the units at another school to complete your required 12 units, you must provide proof of enrollment and proof of course completion to your International Student Adviser.  Failure to do so could result in a violation of your F-1 immigration status.

Please note:

You can drop in without an appointment to speak with ISP academic counselors and immigration advisors! Their drop-in schedule could be found here: https://www.deanza.edu/international/contact.html
